Sailing in Fiji

Fiji, is known for its stunning turquoise waters, abundant coral reefs, and picturesque islands – so it was only appropriate that on a recent trip to Fiji we got out on the water for a sailing experience.  

Fiji boasts over 300 islands, each with its unique charm, and we were lucky to explore Fiji's beautiful Mamanuca Islands in luxury onboard South Sea Sailing’s new sailing catamaran – SABRE.

The 78 foot vessel took us on an exceptional full-day sailing experience.  It was a leisurely start with us departing Port Denarau at 9.45am (so a good breakfast and sleep in was allowed).  We grabbed a welcome beverage before being shown to our booth we reserved on board and settled in for the calm cruise through to the Mamanuca’s.  Morning Tea was served and through out the day water and soft drinks are available…..but as we had reserved a booth, we enjoyed a complimentary bottle of bubbles to start the day off.  

And before you know it – we were arriving in at our reef for snorkelling.  One positive with Fiji being closed for Tourism recently is seeing the regeneration of the coral reefs in the region.  The reefs are vibrant and teeming with marine life, including colourful fish, turtles, and even the occasional encounter with manta rays or reef sharks.  SABRE’s snorkel guides are fantastic along with all the new gear….including plenty of noodles for people who just want to “cruise the reef”.

It was time for some hydration, so we swam over to a sand bank where people had settled in with the best “uber drinks” delivery ever – cocktails made to order came from SABRE on their tender boat, and this was the start of the two hours of lunchtime wine and beers included in the day package.  

The water was so crystal clear (as some of us discovered – catching the sun and turning red)! After a drink or two it was time for lunch on board.  So a short paddleboard back to SABRE and we were enjoying the fresh buffet of seafood, meats and salads on offer.

It was then back to the sandbank for more relaxing and swimming before we needed to hop of board for our cruise back to the mainland.  For the rest of the trip we relaxed under the sail in the comfortable bean bags on the ‘trampoline’ (only getting up for a yummy afternoon tea) at the rear of the cat.  It was the perfect way to end the day, and being back at Port Denarau at 4.45pm meant we were not rushed for our dinner reservation.

We came away thinking this is the perfect experience for visitors who have been to Fiji plenty of times – if offers a fantastic luxurious experience and even people who are not comfortable on water will be amazed as the smoothness of the trip.  With SABRE we can charter exclusively for groups up to 70 people.
